I am pleased to share my recent study, “The Sinicization of the Kaifeng Jews in Late Imperial China.”
This article examines the Kaifeng Jews—one of the most distinctive Jewish diaspora communities in the Far East—from the perspectives of the history of religions and religious phenomenology. It explores how centuries of interaction with Chinese society shaped their historical development, religious beliefs, and worship practices.
The study argues that while the Kaifeng Jews preserved key elements of the Sephardic Jewish tradition, they also incorporated significant influences from Confucian thought and Chinese cultural values, resulting in a unique religious synthesis. Their experience offers valuable insights into diaspora, religious adaptation, cultural exchange, and identity formation in a non-Western context.
I look forward to engaging with colleagues and scholars interested in Jewish studies, Chinese religions, diaspora studies, and comparative religion.
